Obituary of Billy Charles Dowdy
Funeral services for Billy Charles Dowdy 81, of Whitehouse, will be held 3pm Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 3pm Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 10519 FM 344, Whitehouse, TX 75791, with the Reverend Benny Portwood officiating. Under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
Billy Charles passed away peacefully from this Earth on January 4, 2018. He was born October 3, 1936 in Whitehouse to Herman and Emma Dark Dowdy. He attended Whitehouse ISD and finished with his GED. He met Sonya Delight Obar and was married on July 4, 1958. At the age of 23, he enlisted into the US Army and served until he was honorably discharged in July of 1965. He went to work for Brookshire Grocery Company as a security Guard and then moved over to maintenance until he retired in 1998.
Bill was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church since he was born and later became a Deacon and Office Treasurer for many years. He would go and visit fellow members that were sick or in the hospital. He enjoyed putting together puzzles, watching westerns, Wheel of Fortune, Hee Haw and Polka shows. He enjoyed going camping with his family and attending Bluegrass festivals.
Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Delight Dowdy; son, Scott Dowdy and wife Patty of Whitehouse, Daughter Lisa of Whitehouse; his only two grandchildren, Amber Dickey and husband Tyler of Troup, and Haley Dowdy of Whitehouse; sister, Beverlyn Richey and husband Wayne of Tyler; Sister-in-law’s, Marie Carter of Whitehouse, Alice “Tutt” Dowdy of Whitehouse, Barbara McGraw of Huntsville, Rita Jackson of Van; Brother-in-law’s Russ Obar and wife Aris of Troup and Claude Obar and wife C.K. of Oklahoma City, OK. Along with many other extended cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Emma Dowdy; his brothers, Alton and Kenneth Dowdy; Father-in-law, Alan Obar and wife Margret of Troup; Brother-in-law’s Paul McGraw of Huntsville, George Carter of Whitehouse, and John Jackson of Van.
Visitation will be at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church 2pm-3pm on Sunday, January 7, 2018.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Van Ministry or The Gideon Bible Ministry at 10519 FM 344, Whitehouse, TX 75791.
