Obituary of Colvin Atlee Lackey
Graveside services for Colvin ‘C. A.’ Lackey, 80, of Tyler, will be held on Monday, August 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Whitehouse Cemetery, Whitehouse, Texas with the Reverend Matt Thomas officiating.
Colvin Atlee Lackey, known as C. A., passed away peacefully on August 22, 2015. C.A. was born November 16, 1934, to Delbert and Ida Dodson Lackey near Tyler, Texas. He graduated from Whitehouse High School as salutatorian in 1953 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1957. He continued his education at North Texas State University and the University of Houston. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1957 until 1959.
On June 29, 1957, he married Gwendolyn Rowlett and after his service in the Army, they made their home in Pasadena, Texas. C. A. began teaching at Pasadena High School in 1959 and for the next twenty years, taught Government to half of all graduating seniors. For the last five years of his teaching career, he taught DECA and supported many students as they began their business careers.
Following his retirement from teaching, C.A. and Gwen moved to Silsbee, Texas, where he became the President of Silsbee Trading and Transportation Company. After selling the company and Gwen's retirement from teaching, they built their home in Smith County where they've lived since 1992. Until recently, C. A. trained and worked hunting dogs and was known for his expertise throughout Texas and beyond. He and Gwen met many fine people and made dear friends through this work.
C.A. is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Gary Lackey, and his mother-in-law Audrey Billings. Celebrating his life and treasuring his memory are Gwen, his wife for 58 years, his daughter, Debbie Lackey Seeger, and his grandchildren Ted Seeger and Catherine Seeger, his sister-in-law Jerri Bossley and her husband Jim Bossley, and Jerri's daughter Tammy Terry Rodriguez and her husband, Jim Rodriguez.
C. A. and Gwen faithfully attended Whitehouse United Methodist Church until he became ill. He was a Christian and a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cottle Funeral Home Chapel, Troup.
The family wishes to express thanks to the staff at Oak Brook Health Care Center in Whitehouse for their tremendous loving care and support.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests contributions in C.A.’s memory be sent to Whitehouse United Methodist Church, 405 West Main Street, Whitehouse, Texas, 75791.
