Obituary of Colonel James Bowman

Graveside services for Colonel (Retired) James Whitwell Bowman, 96, Troup, are scheduled for 10:00 am, Saturday, December 23, at Pinecrest Cemetery, Troup, with Reverend Mike Cline officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup. Mr. Bowman died Wednesday, December 20, 2006 in a Whitehouse nursing home. He was born September 9, 1910 in Oklahoma to the late Lee and Ella Whitwell Bowman. He married Wanda Martin in 1939 and she preceded him in death in 2001. He had a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Bowman had retired in 1965 from the U.S. Army, having served 30 years in many domestic and foreign posts. He served in combat during World War II, taking part in the D-Day landing in Sicily and the in the invasion of Normandy with the early landing on Omaha Beach. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He had lived in Rogers Arkansas for 30 years before moving to Troup in 1996. Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Hinkle, Troup; four grandchildren, Greg Hinkle, Roanoke, Virginia, Diane Hinkle, Round Rock, Whit Bowman, Whitehouse, and Paul Hinkle, Troup; and two great grandchildren. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Cameron-J. Jarvis Troup Municipal Library, Post Office Box 721, Troup, Tx 75789.
