Obituary of Steven Dowdy
Services for Steven Leon Dowdy, 62, Troup, are scheduled for 1:00 pm, Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at the First Assembly of God Church, Whitehouse, with the Reverends Michael Fleming and Michael Boudreaux officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Union Grove Cemetery, Troup, under direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
He went to be with his Lord and Savior, November 11, 2010, in Troup. He was born in Margarita Canal Zone, Republic of Panama on December 2, 1947, to Edward Leon and Mary Bodden Dowdy.
He met the love of his life Janet Fain in Hayward, California and they married July 27, 1969 at the Full Gospel Temple, Hayward, California, founded by Janet's father, Reverend John M. Fain.
Steven served three tours in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, the Navy Commendation Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, The Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device, and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross with Palm & Frame) Ribbon Bar.
He attended the First Assembly of God Church, Whitehouse. He retired from Trane after 23 years employment.
Steven was a people person and never met a stranger! He loved to tell stories of his Navy Days, work and childhood adventures with his brothers and sisters. Family vacations were spent fishing and hunting. He was an animal lover and as a young boy he was always bringing home stray dogs. He loved to sing and could be seen and heard at area karaoke events. Those who loved him will miss his bright smile and laughter.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Leon Dowdy.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Janet Dowdy, Troup; three sons and two daughters-in-laws, Steven M. and Kelly Dowdy, Clovis, New Mexico, David A. Dowdy, Troup, John E. Dowdy and DeAnn Babineau, Mather, California; daughter and son-in-law, Trena and John Harrington, Curlew, Washington; mother, Mary Dowdy, Bullard; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Glen and Toni Dowdy, Troup, Paul Dowdy, Bullard and Johnny and Donna Dowdy, Troup; sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and Anton Lustig, Galatin, Kathy Holdway and Jeffrey Lee Basehore, Edom; grandchildren, Aaron Dowdy, Troup, Morgan McGaha, Josiah and Judah Dowdy all of Clovis, New Mexico, Riley Babineau, Carissa and Nathaniel Dowdy all of Mather, California, Jazz Brisbane and Jaden Harrington of Curlew, Washington; aunts and uncles, Nelda and Billy Sadler and George Hamilton; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be Lester Sanders, Jonathan Lustig, Eric Dowling, Jeremy Dowdy, Jason Dowdy, and Paul Edward Dowdy, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Anton Lustig, Jeffrey Basehore, Jon Morrow, and Jimmy Henson.
The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Monday, November 22.
