Obituary of Dan Riggs
Services for Dan C. Riggs, 83, of Troup are scheduled for 11:00 am, Monday, August 2, at the First Baptist Church, Troup with the Reverend Doctor Paul Saylors officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Pinecrest Cemetery, Troup, under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
Mr. Riggs passed away July 30, 2010, in his home.
Dan was born February 18, 1927, in Jack County, Texas to the late Sam and Necia Riggs. At 17 he joined the United States Navy, proudly serving during World War II from February 1944 to February 1946 aboard the destroyer escort Thomas F. Nickel. During his service he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.
He married Frances Richardson March 17, 1946, in Mineral Wells, Texas and enjoyed 64 years together. He retired in 1988 after working 37 years with Chicago Bridge and Iron.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Troup, where he was a member of the Friendly Sunday School Class.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers, Sammy, Howard and Jim Riggs; mother-in-law, Ruby Bickley; and brother-in-law, Roy Richardson.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Riggs, Troup; daughter, Teresa Eddleman, San Antonio; granddaughter, Kristi Ann Villanueva and her husband Gus; grandson, Mike Eddleman and his wife Kelly; great-granddaughters, Alex Villanueva and Marissa Eddleman; sister, Doris Evans, Spring; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Patricia and Mack Richards, Memphis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Otho and Frances Richardson, Bushland and Loyce Howard and Ruth Ann Richardson, Amarillo.
The family would like to thank the many friends, relatives and neighbors for their prayers and assistance as well as Hospice of East Texas for their compassion, assistance and dedication.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Cancer Society in Dan's memory.
The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Sunday, August 1.
