Obituary of Johnnie Skaggs

Services for Johnnie Clark Skaggs, 90, Overton, are scheduled for 10:00 am, Saturday, July 10 at the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home chapel, Overton with the Reverend Atwell Hankins and Doctor Charles Paschall officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Overton City Cemetery. Mr. Skaggs died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, in a Tyler hospice facility. He was born May 3, 1920, in Booker to the late William Andrew and Harriett Sherlock Skaggs. He moved to Overton in 1921 and at the age of 17, he moved to Wichita Falls. He returned to Overton in 1983. Mr. Skaggs was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving as a tank driver. He was in combat for over 180 days, serving in several battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Staff Sergeant and received the purple heart. He was employed by Harvey Drilling Company and later for Equipment Salvage and Sales, both in Wichita Falls and was a mechanic and truck driver. Mr. Skaggs was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Skaggs, May 28, 1999; by a son, Harold Leon Skaggs; brothers, George Skaggs, Leonard Skaggs, William Skaggs, Barney Skaggs and James Skaggs; and sisters, Emma Blosser, Ruby Pearl Skaggs and Lucy Belle Skaggs. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Stephen Schrader, Overton; sisters, Myrtle Dillard, Mary Rhodes Lewis, and Nellie Honzell, all of Overton; granddaughter, Stephanie Leigh Schrader; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Honzell, Jason Honzell, Robert Honzell, Tyler Honzell, Daniel Croteau, and David Croteau.
