Obituary of James F. ‘Jim’ Kyger

Services for James F. "Jim" Kyger, Troup, are scheduled for 10:00 am Tuesday, June 15, at the First Baptist Church, Troup, with Reverend Doctor Paul Saylors and Reverend James Cheatham officiating. Burial will be in the Bradford Cemetery, Troup, under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home of Troup.  Mr. Kyger passed away Saturday, June 12, 2010 in a Tyler hospital. He was born October 15, 1923 in Beaumont to the late Bryan H. and Lucretia Youngblood Kyger. Mr. Kyger was a graduate of Waco High School, class of 1942. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he graduated from Baylor University in 1950 with his B.B.A. During World War II, Mr. Kyger served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. His military duties took him to the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific theaters. He served during the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He married Jo Nan Shaw in Nacogdoches, December 3, 1950. He retired from Cities Service Oil Company in 1986 and had made his home in Troup, since 1989. During his more active years, he enjoyed fishing and playing golf with Ray Griffith, Mike Slezak and other friends at Hilltop Country Club, Troup. He was a deacon at the First Baptist Church, Troup. Mr. Kyger is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jo Nan Kyger, Troup; his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tim O'Quinn, Tucumcari, New Mexico; grandson, T.J. O'Quinn, Oklahoma City; and a sister, Sara McClelland, Henderson. He was preceded in death by his parents Bryan H. and Lucretia Kyger, and brothers Bryan Kyger and Bill Kyger. Pallbearers will be John Kyger, Bill Kyger, Jr., Eugene Martin, Tim O'Quinn, T.J. O'Quinn, Joe Layne, Leroy Streck and Larry Streck. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Griffith, Mike Slezak, the Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Troup, Texas and members of the Men's Adult Two Sunday School class.    The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm, Monday, June 14. Memorials, if desired, to honor Mr. Kyger, may made them to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 516, Troup, Texas 75789.
