Obituary of Alfred Dewey ‘Al’ Tuley

Services for Alfred Dewey 'Al' Tuley, 80, Lake Tyler East, are scheduled for 2:00 pm Friday, May 21, at the First United Methodist Church, Troup with the Reverends Mike Cline and Charles Jordan officiating. Burial will be in the Griffin Cemetery, near Troup, under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup. Mr. Tuley died Tuesday, May 18, 2010, in a Tyler hospice facility. He was born January 1, 1930, in Holbrook, Arizona, the third son of Washington Dewey Tuley and Mattie Lou McCleary Tuley. After graduating from high school, Alfred served four years in the United States Air Force. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. He worked for 22 years for the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole and then became a licensed Texas Real Estate Appraiser until his retirement in 1992. A longtime resident of Austin, he had been a resident of Lake Tyler East since 2001. He loved woodworking and built about 50 dulcimers for family and friends. He taught many to play the dulcimer and taught several young men how to build them. Mr. Tuley was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Troup serving on committees and as a member of the United Methodist Men. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil R. Tuley and Roy Tuley. He is survived by his wife, LaDelle Winship Tuley, Lake Tyler East, two sons and daughters-in-law, Herschiel and Belen Tuley, Corpus Christi and John and Susan Tuley, Cumberland, Rhode Island; daughters and sons-in-law, Katie Tuley, Copperas Cove and Carrie and Eddy Hobbs, Whitehouse; grandchildren and their spouses, Alfred Tuley, Austen Hobbs, Blake and Kelly Hobbs, Paul Hugg and Bruce Hugg; two great-grandsons, Ayden Hobbs and Keaton Hobbs; and three nephews, Cecil E. Tuley, Michael Tuley, and Philip Tuley. Pallbearers will be Herschiel Tuley, John Tuley, Alfred Tuley, Austen Hobbs, Blake Hobbs and Bruce Hugg. Honorary Pallbearers will be Teen Despain, Eddy Hobbs, Paul Hugg, and the Fellowship Sunday School Class of the First United Methodist Church, Troup. Memorials, if desired, may be made to First United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 202 East Duval, Troup, TX 75789. The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 20.
