Obituary of Eugene McElroy
Services for Eugene McElroy, 86, Troup, are scheduled for 11:00 am, Monday, August 7, at the First United Methodist Church, Troup, with the Reverends Mike Cline and Jon Stouffer officiating. Burial will be in Pinecrest Cemetery, Troup, under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
Mr. McElroy died Saturday, August 5, 2006 in a Tyler hospital. He was born January 22, 1920 in Cherokee County to the late Novy and Mina Belle Hampton McElroy. He married Kathleen Long, December 31, 1944, in the Henry's Chapel community near Troup.
Mr. McElroy recieved his Bachelors degree from Northwestern University, Louisiana, his Masters in Education from Stephen F. Austin University, and his law degree from the University of Texas, Austin.
He moved to Troup in 1948 and was high school principal, coach, and teacher. In 1963, he became superintendent of the Troup Independent School District and retired in 1979. He then served as assistant plant manager for Neckover Trailer Company for several years.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was very active and served the church faithfully in all capacities.
He was a member of the Troup Rotary Club and Past President, the Troup Industrial Foundation, and the Texas Bar Association. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde McElroy, in 2004.
Survivors include is wife of 61 years, Kathleen McElroy, Troup; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe Paul and Barbara Kay McElroy, Troup; a sister and brother-in-law, Elwyn and Donald Bone, Kilgore; a grandson, Ryan Townsend, Dallas; a granddaughter and her husband, Amy and Shane Walters, Tyler; and a great grandchild, Millard Eli Walters.
The family will recieve friends at the funeral home from 6:00pm until 8:00 pm, Sunday, August 6.
Pallbearers will be David Sadler, Craig Hughes, Ryan Townsend, Jim Carlyle, Shane Walters, and Patrick McElroy.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Friendship Sunday School Class, Fred Head, Mike Basquette, Chuck McElroy, Bryan McElroy, Ray Toole and Jeremy Hughes.
