Obituary of Florene Martin
Services for Florene Choate Martin, 94, of the Concord Community, near Troup, are scheduled for 10:00 am, Monday, January 25, in the Elwyn M. Gibson Memorial Chapel of Garden of Memories Memorial Park, Lufkin with Reverend Duane Dougherty officiating, under the direction Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.Mrs. Martin died Friday, January 22, in Henderson. She was born February 7, 1915, in Manitou, Oklahoma to the late Robert Eston and Flora Bruton Choate.She married Joe Frank Martin, June 14, 1935 and celebrated 65 years of marriage. Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Nacogdoches High School and attended Stephen F. Austin University and Lufkin Business School. She was employed by the Lufkin ISD as school secretary.She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lufkin for 51 years. She was active as a Sunday School teacher, the Senior Adult organization, and women's mission organization. Mrs. Martin served on the Board of Trustees of the church, Search committee for a pastor, and the committee to write the first by-laws adopted by the church. She was a member and served as the president of the Cut and Grow Garden Club.She was a member of the Angelina County Retired Teachers and was a volunteer for many years at Memorial Hospital, Lufkin.At the time of her death, Mrs. Martin lived in Troup and was member of the Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church.She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Martin, in 2001 and sons, Damon Martin and Steve Martin.Survivors include two grandchildren and their spouses, Stephanie and Greg Sampson, Overton and Jason and Brandi Martin, Troup; five great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; and special friends Walter and Jean Ann Keen and their daughters.The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm, Sunday, January 24.Memorials, if desired, may be made to Buckner Benevolence, 600 North Pearl, Suite 2000, Dallas, TX 75201, the Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 212 CR 4705, Troup, TX 75789, or the First Baptist Church, 106 E.
