Obituary of Robert Young

Funeral services for Overton Mayor Robert Lee Young, 67, are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Sunday, March 22, at the First Baptist Church, Overton with the Reverends Charles Paschall and Atwell Hankins officiating. Burial will be in the Overton City Cemetery under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton. Mayor Young died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, in Tyler. He was born November 4, 1941, in Henderson to the late M. Pete and Pauline Gill Young. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, The Texas Association of Sports Officials, the Overton Golf Association, and was president of the Overton Cemetery Association. He was a member and helped organize the Circle 8 Square Dance Club in the 1960's and was a member until 2007. For 36 years, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired as Overton Postmaster in 1997. Mayor Young had served on the Overton School Board and the Overton City Council and was serving his second term as Mayor. He was named the Citizen of the Year by the Overton Chamber of Commerce in 2008. He also received the State of Texas Outstanding Public Service Award from State Representative Chuck Hopson, Distric II. Mayor Young is a member and a past deacon of the First Baptist Church, Overton. He married Lana Laughlin, in Overton, in 1961. Survivors include his wife Lana Young of Overton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Robbi and Mark Carnes, Overton, Nickie and Johnny Rhea, Kilgore, and Jennifer and Keith LaRue, Longview; two brothers, Willard Young, Longview and Dudley Young, Arp; six grandchildren, Kyle Osburn, Amanda Osburn, Stephen Bearden, Drake Plunkett, Caden Plunkett, and Carissa Magras; two great-grandchildren, Sydni Kyle Vaughn and Jesse Magras; and several nieces, nephews and cousins Pallbearers will be Neil Osburn, Alan Beasley, William Brown, Mike Bates, Kyle Osburn, and Stephen Bearden. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charlie Malone, B.J. Potts, Jack Montgomery, Jimmy Smires, and Monte Rouquette. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Overton Cemetery Association, P.O.
