Obituary of Hugh Phinny

Graveside services for Hugh Sloan Phinny, 86, Overton are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 3, at the Mason Cemetery with Reverend Ronnie Glover officiating under direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton. Mr. Phinny died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 in Tyler. He was born September 17, 1919 in Corsicana and served in the US Army. He was a squad leader in the Combat Infantry in the Normandy and the Rhineland Campaigns and received the Combat Infantryman Badge, the American Defense Service Medal, EAME Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and 1 Bronze Arrowhead, the Good Conduct Medal, 2 Service Stripes, and 4 Overseas Service Stripes. He participated in the Operation Ivy Atomic tests at Eniwetok Proving Ground, Marshall Islands, conducted by the Army, Navy, Air Force and Atomic Energy Commission in 1952. He married Mary Ann Jones September 15, 1941 in San Antonio and retired from the US Army. He moved to Overton in 1967 where he was a member of the V.F. W., the Masonic Lodge and worked for J.W. Green. He was also a member of the Bible Baptist Church and had served as trustee and treasurer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Phinny on December 24, 1998 and brothers and sisters, including, Luther Huggins. He is survived by a sister, Kate Huggins, San Antonio; nephews, Edwin Phinny, Corsicana, Steve Huggins, San Antonio, James Huggins, Grand Saline, and Johnny Phinny, Lindaler; a niece, Kathi Meyers, Grandbury; friends, Reverend Ronnie and Barbara Glover, Arp.
