Obituary of Douglas Martin
Services for Douglas R. Martin, 82, Trinity, will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 25, in the Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Reverend Mike Loftin and Reverend Duane Dougherty officiating. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery under direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
Mr. Martin died Monday, March 21 in a Tyler hospital. He was born July 24, 1928 in Concord to the late Willis B. and Jessie Mae Martin. After graduating from Carlisle High School, at Price, Texas, in 1948, he was employed by Child's Piggly Wiggly Company at Jacksonville, Texas, working as produce manager, assistant store manager, and store manager. On August 27, 1951, Doug was employed by the Ohio Oil Company (now, Marathon Oil Company), as a roustabout in Orange. He also served as a pumper and operator on a workover rig. The latter part of 1957, Doug was transferred to the low absorption plant area. His work consisted of being an operator, maintenance, plant mechanic, instrument man, and relief foreman. He assisted in all plant shutdown and startup operations.
In 1961, Doug worked as a district instrument man in charge of all gas measurements.
In 1951, Doug enrolled in a public speaking course. In 1961 and 1963, he attended the Southwestern Gas Measurements Course at the University of Oklahoma, During 1962 and 1964, he took Electronics No. 743 (basic and advanced) and Pneumatic Industrial Instruments No. 741 and 742 at Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont, Texas. In 1966, he attended an LACT Unit course in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In 1965, he was promoted to engineering technician. Doug worked on special supervisory projects and was responsible for running bottomhole pressures, packer leakage tests, completing state and federal forms for Texas and Louisiana.
In March, 1969, Doug was transferred from Orange, Texas to Hobbs, New Mexico as production foreman. In April 1971, he was transferred to the Houston Division as safety engineer. In February 1974, he was transferred to Lafayette, Louisiana as Main Pass Block 306 Production Superintendent.
Doug married the former Betty Jo Slaid, June 20, 1948, in Jacksonville. Doug enjoyed golfing and fishing and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Besides his parents, Doug was preceded in death by a sister, Marry Ross.
Survivors include his wife of of 62 years, Betty Martin, Trinity; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Danny Martin, Trinity and Randy and Cindy Martin, Longview; a sister and two brothers-in-law, Juanita and Dudley Wardlaw, Tyler and Harry Ross, Longview; five grandchildren and their spouses, Marissa and Robert Hajovsky, Matthew Martin, Cody and Cady Martin, Whitney and Eric Slack, and Robby Martin; three great grandchildren, Lane, Wyatt and Colter Hajovsky; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jim Harrison, Robert Hajovsky, Matthew Martin, Cody Martin, Eric Slack, and Robby Martin.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Martin, L. H. Holcomb, Harry Ross, Dudley Wardlaw, D. L. Stewart, Pete Ledford and Harold Woodall.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday, March 24.
