Obituary of Horace Stroud
Horace Bryant Stroud passed away December 14, 2013 in Austin, Texas at the age of 97. He was born December 7, 1916 in Gridley, Arkansas to the late Matthew Bryant Stroud and Leona Reynolds Stroud and was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church.
He attended Colfax and Van schools and Lon Morris College where he played on the varsity basketball team. He moved in Overton in 1944 where he resided until 2007.
H.B. grew up during the Great Depression working various jobs, playing on softball teams, constructing World War II defense buildings, and retired from La Gloria Oil and Gas Refinery (now Spectra Energy) in Tyler after 38 years of employment in the oil industry as an operator.
After retirement he loved his 10 years of work and play at the Overton Golf Club and was an avid lifelong sports fan.
He is survived by his son, Michael Bryant Stroud, MD of Granbury; three daughters, Patricia (Don) Willis of Wimberley, Susan (Rick) McFarland of Austin, and Sally (Mark) Land of Austin; three step-children, Jack Hess of Houston, Paula (Truett) Clampitt of Houston, and Sara (William) Roney of Sydney, Australia; 16 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers (Price, Marvin, Clayton, and Gilbert Stroud); four sisters Nora Goggins, Irene Martin, Madelyn Mathews, and Bernice Geddie; wife of 21 years, Harriet Gray Stroud; and wife of 50 years, Jean Patrick Stroud.
Funeral services arranged by Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home of Overton, TX. Visitation to be held on Wednesday, December 18, 5:00-7:00 pm; and at the Stroud Family home at 1217 Briarwood St. on Thursday, December 19 at 11:00 am; followed by burial at the Overton City Cemetery at 1:00 pm.
