Obituary of Bernice Cottle

 A visitation for Bernice Cottle, 88, a longtime resident of Elgin will be held from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm, Sunday, August 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Troup. Arrangements are by Cottle Funeral Home, Troup. A service is scheduled for 6:00 pm, Monday, August 12, at the Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home Chapel in Elgin with the Reverend Jimmie W. Cottle officiating. A visitation will follow. Burial will be in the Elgin City Cemetery. Mrs. Cottle was born April 26, 1925, in the Alum Creek Community of Bastrop County to the late James C. and Eliza Hanks. She died Monday, August 5, 2013, in Coos Bay, Oregon. She was a graduate of Smithville High School. She married Terrell Z. Cottle April 26, 1953, in Valley Mills, Texas. He preceded her in death September 28, 1992. Mrs. Cottle was a retired clerk having worked in Elgin for Nelson's Foods, Ramsey Pharmacy and Ace Drug Mart. She retired from Sowell's Drapery Shop in Elgin. She was a lifetime Baptist and enjoyed Bluegrass and Sacred Harp music, gardening, especially her flowers. She recently moved to Oregon with her daughter to be near her grandson. In addition to parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Cottle and Beth Elrod, and a brother, Chapman Hanks. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Phyllis Cottle of Troup; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Ron Pruett of Coos Bay, Oregon; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Nathan and Jenny Brown of Coos Bay, Oregon; four granddaughters and three grandsons-in-law, Candace and Jesse James of Tyler, Catherine and Jarrod Wallum of Troup, Cassandra and Mike Brock of Lubbock and Celeste Cartwright of Flower Mound; great-grandchildren, Bryce Wallum, Macy Wallum, Aiden James and Sierra Smithy; a brother, Oscar Ray Hanks of Texas City ; a sister-in-law, Doris Hanks of Luling; numerous nieces, nephews; cousins and an extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Coos Bay, Oregon.
