Obituary of Vernon Chesshir

Services for Vernon D. Chesshir, 84, Troup, are scheduled for 10:00 am, Thursday, February 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, Troup with Reverend Doug Blanton officiating. Burial will be in the Pinecrest Cemetery, Troup under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.  Mr. Chesshir passed away Monday, February 14, 2011. He was born November 3, 1926, in Chocktaw County, Oklahoma to the late Benjamin Harrison Chesshir and Mary Elizabeth Foster Chesshir.  He was a 1945 graduate of Fort Towson High School, Fort Towson, Oklahoma.  Mr. Chesshir had been a resident of Troup since 1968. For many years, he owned and operated Chesshir Shower Door Company in Houston, providing much of the glass for the Houston Astrodome. After moving to Troup, he was a building contractor and farmer and rancher. Mr. Chesshir was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Troup where he was an Elder Emeritus.  Vernon Chesshir was a generous man, committed to his family, and well respected in the community. He was a tough man who valued hard work. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Verna Lee Chesshir, August 21, 2003. Survivors include his wife of 6½ years, Virginia Chesshir, Troup; sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary and Sandra Chesshir, Troup and Jim Chesshir, Junction; sisters and a brother-in-law, Helen Mentzel, Sherman and Donna and Ray Duke, Whitehouse; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jay and Carol Hollingshead, Valley Center, California; sister-in-law, Francis Hall, Amarillo; grandchildren and their spouses, Michelle Chesshir Snider and Jonathan Snider, Barbara Chesshir Ampong and Benjamin James Ampong, and Amanda Jo Chesshir; and great-grandchildren, Victoria Moore, Brianne Nall, Mykayla Ampong and Aaron Ampong; and his wife's children and their spouses, Mac and Rosemary Groves, Mark Groves and Becky and Duane Marshall; his wife's grandchildren and their spouses, Patrick Groves, Anna Groves, Catie Groves, Carrie and Danny Breed, Ashley and Nick Absalon, and Jeff Marshall; and his wife's great-grandchildren, Titus Breed, Ellie Breed and Lealah Breed. Pallbearers will be Lavon Medley, Bo Sandifer, Jack Gowen, John Mogle, James Ampong and Gary Malone.  Honorary Pallbearers will be David Wilson, Bob Winters, Jim Carlyle, Scotty Wilson and members of the Fort Towson, Oklahoma High School Class of 1945.  The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Wednesday, February 16.
