Obituary of James S. Garrett
Services for James S. 'Willie' Garrett, 81, Troup are scheduled for 11:00 am, Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at the First Assembly of God Church, Troup with the Reverends Wes Bynum and Tracy D. Wright officiating. Burial will be in the Pinecrest Cemetery, Troup.
Mr. Garrett died Sunday, December 9, 2012, in a Whitehouse nursing home. He was born July 22, 1931, in Cherokee County to the late Avery Millard and Ruby Sadler Garrett. He had lived in the Troup area all of his life.
He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He worked at the S. Barron store in the Henry's Chapel community during his young life.
Mr. Garrett began working in the oil field in 1950. He worked for Gipson Drilling for 25 years, R. Lacy, Inc. for seven years and Maxwell Well service for two years. He went into business for himself in 1985, owning and operating J-GAR Well Service.
After 45 years in the oil field, he retired and then took up a hobby of collecting old things, "Antiques". He and his wife turned his grandparents' home into a museum. He enjoyed traveling from Georgia to Canada looking for unusual things.
He loved raising cows and donkeys.
He married his wife of 61 years, Jean Allen August 4, 1948, in Henderson. She preceded him in death November 29, 2009.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and his step mother, Tynie Barron Garrett.
Survivors include; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Garrett of Troup; granddaughter and her husband, Melissa and Jeremiah Redding of Troup; grandson and his wife, Kevin and Gaylynn Garrett of Troup; great granddaughters, Victoria and Brianna Redding, Ashlyn and Cheyenna Garrett; and great grandson, Jake David Garrett; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Glenda Garrett of Troup; a niece, Teresa Fuller; and a nephew, Greg Garrett.
Pallbearers will be Latrell Allen, Michael Lyon, Frank Jakubik Jr, Travis Thompson, Danny Barnes and Eugene Shuttlesworth.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold Sadler, Loys Sadler, Forest Sadler, Bill Sadler, Les Sadler, Frank Jakubik Sr. and Lance Howell.
The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Tuesday, December 11.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Oak Brook Health Care Center, Whitehouse where he had lived for the past 3½ years and to the Hospice of East Texas.
