Obituary of J.W. Carson

Services for J. W. Carson, 89, Overton, are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Monday, October 8, 2012, at the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home chapel, Overton with the Reverend David Hampton officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Mason Cemetery, Arp.  Mr. Carson died Thursday, October 5, 2012, in a Kilgore nursing home. He was born  January 1, 1923, in Abilene to the late Tom and Willie Cook Carson. He grew up in Austin and lived in Katy for 33 years before moving to Overton in 1985. For 36 years, he was employed as a maintenance foreman for Exxon, retiring in July 1983. He was a World War II veteran serving as a PFC in the U.S. Army Air Corps . Mr. Carson was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kilgore where he was a Deacon. He had served as the director of the San Felipe Association of Baptist Men for three years. He was a Mason, and was a member of the Canton Masonic Lodge #98, Arp where he served as chaplain. He had also served as the chaplain for the Katy Masonic Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jarrod King and a great-granddaughter, Zoe King. Mr. Carson married Winnie East January 26, 1942, in Austin. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Winnie East Carson of Overton; a son and daughter-in-law, Jay Ross Carson and Betsy Carson of Arp; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and James King of Overton; a sister, Maxine Hill of Austin; six grandchildren, Jana Jaye Campbell, Courtney Lynn Carson, Janai Janet King, Justin Jay Carson, Lacy Carson and Cayla Jaye Carson; 10 great-grandchildren, Breann King, Seth King, Cody King, Lexi King, Jordan King, Darrian King, Emma King, Colton Campbell, Dylan Campbell, and Gracie Campbell; a niece, Donna Shiller; and a nephew, Alfred Hill. Pallbearers will be Grandsons, Justin Carson, Cody King, Colton Campbell, Dylan Campbell, Jordan King and Robert Smith. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Sunday, October 7.
