Obituary of Fred McElroy

Services for Fred McElroy, 70, Arp, are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Tuesday, April 10, at the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home chapel, Overton, with the Reverend Tommy Harden officiating. Burial will be in the Mason Cemetery, Arp. Mr. McElroy died Saturday, April 7, in a Tyler hospital. He was born October 13, 1936, in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Arlie Franklin McElroy and Vivian McKee McElroy. He graduated from Shades Cahaba High School. He also attended Tyler Junior College and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. McElroy retired as a deputy from the Smith County Sheriff's Department in 1998. Prior to his service as a deputy, he was a patrolman for the Tyler Police Department. Mr. McElroy married Brenda Maynard in Arp, March 18, 1961. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Brenda Maynard McElroy, Arp; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Cheryl McElroy, Arp; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Roland Davis, Asheville, Alabama and Charlene and William Rawlings, Birmingham, Alabama; three grandchildren, Andrew McElroy, Keifer Bell, and Glade Smith; a niece, Belinda Williams; three great nephews; and a great niece. Pallbearers will be Rodney Easley, Justin Easley, Terrell Holcombe, Billy Hill, Jason Hill, and Ernie Haire. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Monday, April 9.
