Obituary of L.J. Parten

Services for L.J. "Jack" Parten, 91, Troup, are scheduled for 1:00 pm, Friday, January 28, at the First United Methodist Church, Troup with Reverend Mike Cline officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Griffin Cemetery, near Troup under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup. Mr. Parten died Tuesday, January 25, 2011, in a Rusk nursing home. He was born November 22, 1919, in Weldon, Texas to the late Jack and Minnie Robinson Parten. He was a longtime resident of Lovelady before moving to the Troup area in 2008. He was a graduate of Midway High School and received his bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University, Huntsville and his master's degree from the University of Houston. Mr. Parten was a retired petroleum equipment engineer. He was also a farmer and rancher who loved horses. He loved writing poetry, carpentry and travel.  Mr. Parten was Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was the Ping Pong champion of the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Troup. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Richard Gerla. Mr. Parten married Jeanette Smith in Houston, October 4, 1941. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Jeanette Parten, Troup; two daughters and a son-in-law, Dr. Jackie Gerla, Troup and Suzanne and Kendall Hay, College Station; three grandchildren, Debbie Reed, Madisonville, Brent Hay and his wife, Sandra, College Station, Jeff Gerla, Troup; an adopted grandson, Chad Meroney, Troup; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. Pallbearers will be Jeff Gerla, Chad Meroney, Brent Hay, Tanner Kutra, Reese Kutra and Robert Milne. The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday, January 27.
