Obituary of Elmer Stanton

Services for Elmer A. Stanton, 88, Overton, are scheduled for 1:00 pm, Friday, March 9 at the Overton Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverends Bruce Wells and Gary Langford officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Troup under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton. Mr. Stanton died Monday, March 6, 2012, in a Kilgore nursing home. He was born August 15, 1923, in Troup to the late Willie A. and Bennie Stephenson Stanton. He attended Salem Schools and moved to Overton from Troup in 1953. He was a World War II veteran serving in the US Army. Mr. Stanton worked as a self employed barber for 45 years, retiring in 1993.  He was a member of the Hall Brothers VFW Post, Overton, for 23 years. He was saved in 1949 and was a committed Christian who was a member of the Overton Missionary Baptist Church where he had served as treasurer.  Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by sisters, Ruby Fitzgerald, Willie Mae Fitzgerald and Mildred Smith.  He married Ruby Freeman, May 24, 1947, in Troup. Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Ruby Stanton, Overton; four sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Judy Stanton, Kilgore, Darrel and Holly Stanton, Lindale, Allen and Gale Stanton, Garland, and Carlin and Jennifer Stanton, Kilgore; two brothers, J. T. Stanton and James Stanton, both of Whitehouse; three sisters, Sible Evans, Dripping Springs, Modell Holman, Troup, and Betty Martin, Bullard; 15 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Hall Brothers VFW Post, Overton.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday, March 8.
