Obituary of James R. "Popeye" Barnes

Memorial services for James Richard Barnes, 87, Overton, are scheduled for Thursday, August 15, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton.  Arrangements are under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home in Overton.

Mr. Barnes passed away, Thursday, July 25, 2019 in a hospice facility in Tyler. He was born April 26, 1932 in Carthage to the late Richard Barnes and Arminter Cox.  He married Madeleine Barnes in Tatum on September 3, 1955.  He retired from East Texas Oilfield Service as a backhoe operator, but also worked previously for J.W. Green and Howard Nichols. He was a member of the Overton Missionary Baptist Church.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and rock polishing.  Mr. Barnes was well liked by all that knew him.

Besides his parents, Mr. Barnes was also preceded in death by his son, Charles Ray Barnes.

Survivors include his wife, Madeleine Barnes of Overton; son, James Richard Barnes, Jr. of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; daughter, Pamela Morris and husband, Howard Dale Morris; brother, Bobby Ray Barnes and wife Janie of Shreveport, Louisiana; 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.
