Obituary of Velma 'Popeye' Vestal-Spangler

  Funeral services for Velma ‘Popeye’ Vestal Spangler, 86, of Overton will be 3:00 pm, Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home Chapel, Overton with Reverend Atwell Hankins officiating.

  Mrs. Spangler passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019 in Overton. She was born January 2, 1933 in Overton to the late Robert P. And Hazel Victoria Thomas Harris. She was a lifelong resident of Overton and retired in 1995, after 40 years, having worked for various doctors and Overton Healthcare Center.  In her nursing days, she will be remembered to her patients as Beasley, then later by Vestal. To all her family and old time friends, she will be remembered as ‘Popeye’, which was her nickname from her early childhood.  She was a member of Overton Bible Baptist Church. 

  Besides her parents, Mrs. Spangler was also preceded in death by three husbands, Lester Beasley, (the father of her children), Walter Vestal and Jack Spangler.

  Survivors include her son, Alan Beasley of Lake Striker; her daughter, Vicki C. McClure of Overton; a stepson, Walter ‘Scooter’ Vestal; grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Jennifer Smith, Brad and Renee Smith, Ronnie Howell, Samantha and Terry Sanford; a brother, Jimmy Harris of Longview; two sisters and a brother-in-law,  Nyoka Bell of Arp, and Carolyn and Donnie Spencer of Overton; great grandchildren and a great grandson-in-law, Meaghen and Mitch Stewart, Ashley Smith, Alaina Smith, Alexis Smith, Alec Smith, Troy Smith, Carter Smith, Weston Sanford, Will Sanford, Blaire Sanford, and Clint Sanford; great great granddaughter Skielur Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

  The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 2:00pm, prior to the service.
