Obituary of Hubert Martin
Funeral services for Hubert Martin, 97, Good Springs, will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, January 11, 2019 at Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Reverends David Kurtz and Duane Dougherty officiating. Interment will follow at Concord Cemetery under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
Mr. Martin passed away Tuesday, January 8, at Oak Wood Place Assisted Living in Athens. He was born April 9, 1921 in Concord, Cherokee County, to the late Ned Thomas Martin and Annie Ola Brown Martin. He was one of thirteen children.
He married Opal Martin of Concord on June 28, 1946, soon after returning home from WWII, where he was a highly decorated soldier in the European Theater in General George Patton’s 3rd Army. He was also honored for his service by the Republic of France, receiving membership in the French Legion of Honor.
Hubert is survived by son, Randall Hugh Martin and wife Beth of Martin’s Mill; daughter, Kay Lynn Berry and husband Kenny of Kerens and son-in-law, Glen Alewine of Good Springs; Hubert had four grandchildren, Lee Stuart Martin and wife Jennifer of Villa Grove, IL, Meredith Marie Daniel and husband Ron of Walton, Mathew Grant Berry & wife Kimberly of Mildred, and Amy Danielle Herzog of Kerens; brother, Alvin Martin of Tatum. He had four great grandchildren, Philip Martin Daniel, Madelynn Grace Berry, Kailee Faith Berry and Troy Gene Herzog.
He was preceded in death by Opal, his wife of 70 years, his parents, his daughter Cherry Martin Alewine and 11 siblings.
He was a member of the Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church and an active member of his community. He worked for twenty years as shop foreman at Ford dealerships in Jacksonville and Tyler, before becoming Maintenance Director at Carlisle ISD, where he worked another twenty years.
Visitation will be at Cottle Funeral Home, Thursday, January 10, 2019, from 5-7 pm.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Larry Martin, Wayne Martin, Kenny Martin, Charlie Mahaffey, Dewayne Mahaffey, Tommy Martin and Windell Searcy.
