Owen was a dear friend of our family. We were both his students and he was David's best man when we married. Such a talented and interesting person to know. We loved to travel with him because he knew so much about many places from his travels. He was an amazing artist. We will always think of him when we see his paintings. Such a blessing to know Owen Hamrick and will miss him.

I had hoped to read the following at Owen's funeral....but since it will be a private family service, I will not be able to. However, I thought that I would put it on this condolence page for all to read.
I first met Owen in 1972 as a first year high school teacher at Arp High. I had taught previously at the college level but not the high school level.
Owen became my mentor…..sharing teaching advice and materials. We soon became good friends.
One of the biggest compliments that I could have received was when Owen turned over his Senior English Class to me the second year that I taught. I always felt that his confidence in me as a teacher was such a blessing. I cherished those years of teaching Freshman, Sophomore and Junior classes of English….but Senior English was my favorite….and I always felt that Owen approved of my teaching methods.
The second honor coming from Owen was his asking me to help sponsor the National Honor Society organization. I started assisting Owen with the group in 1980 and then took over complete sponsorship in 1988. Our friendship grew as we worked with this organization in money making projects and in the wonderful trips we took with the students.
The last time Marvin and I visited Owen he barely remembered us….Marvin he remembered even more than me (because Marvin had been one of his first students)!!! But he did remember every word of the University of Texas fight song…..such a faithful fan of his alma mater.
I attended a funeral for my daughter in law’s grandmother a few years back. She had been a beloved English teacher in the Pittsburg, TX area; and a fellow drama teacher gave her such a wonderful eulogy all based around English Literature quotations. I am not able to do that for lack of time….but I will close with the words of Shakespeare: (that Owen loved)

"Thou know'st 'tis common; all that lives must die,
Passing through nature to eternity."
And from the play Henry VI, Part III
(I paraphrase)
He gave his honors to the world,
His blessed part to heaven, and he sleeps in peace.
While words can never fully express how much someone means to us, language can still provide comfort, hope, and even inspiration following the death of a loved one.
Thank you for allowing me time to show respects to my mentor and friend Owen.
