Obituary of Curtis Loyd Shuttlesworth

 Services for Curtis Loyd Shuttlesworth, Troup, will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, October 5, at the First Baptist Church, Troup with Reverend Lynn Ashcraft officiating. Burial with both Masonic and Military Rites will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery, Troup. Mr. Shuttlesworth crossed over to be with his Lord and Savior on the morning of October 2, 2011, in Troup at the age of 82. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Troup. Mr. Shuttlesworth was born on October 7, 1928, in the Salem Community near Troup.  He was raised by his parents the late George and Lillie Shuttlesworth. He attended Salem and Troup Schools. Loyd married Laverne Duty of Troup on October 30, 1948. They were married for 58 years until Laverne's passing in 2006. Mr. Shuttlesworth served his country in the U.S. Navy for three years. He was also a member of the Dixie Masonic Lodge #272, Troup for over 50 years. Loyd and Laverne owned and operated restaurants for over 35 years beginning in Tyler, and later in Troup where he operated Loyd's Drive-In. Many memories were made here by the youth of Troup throughout the years. They also owned Loyd's Steakhouse in Troup which was famous for his "chicken fried steak and gravy." Loyd was also in the produce business for over twenty years selling those famous "Noon Day Onions." Loyd was also an avid fisherman and guide for many years. (Ole Loyd could always tell great fishing stories!) Brother Loyd will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man who had a golden heart, always helping others. In addition to his parents and wife, Loyd was also preceded in death by a son Randy Shuttlesworth; two sons-in-law, Keith Cohagen and Dr. Kerry Rasberry; and three sisters Ruth Moran, Doris Clemets and Tommie Shuttlesworth. Survivors include, two daughters and a son-in-law, Cheryl Lynn and Tommy Simpson, Marlin and Sue Cohagen, Troup; grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin and Mary Gracie, Belton, Julie and Jeremy Bunn, Flint, Dusti and Clint Cover,Troup and Kyle and  Ashley Cohagen, Troup; Great Grandchildren, Bernice Vessels-Gracie, Bailey Bunn, Bracey Cover, Emory Cover, Kari Cover, Kylan Cohagen and Kasen Bridges; a brother, Robert Shuttlesworth, Carthage; brother-In-law and sister-in-law, Merle and Jo Ann Duty, Troup; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Pallbearers will be Merle Duty, Tommy Simpson, Kevin Gracie, Kyle Cohagen, Richard Shuttlesworth, Olan Harley, Joe Layne and Joe Gracie. Honorary Pallbearers will be Claude Obar, Johnny Johnson, George Durham, Fred Head and Billy Mike Basquette. Family and friend visitation is scheduled for 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the First Baptist Church, Troup.
