Obituary of Jerry David Smires

Funeral services for Jerry David Smires, 55 of New London will be at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home Chapel, Overton with Reverend Atwell Hankins officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near New London.

Mr. Smires passed away Thursday, September 27, 2018 in Henderson. He was born November 4, 1962 in Overton to the late Cecil Otto Smires and Berta Faye Cook Smires. He had worked for the Gregg County Police department as a dispatcher and married Shirley Ann Stewart May 12, 1990 in Overton. He loved fishing and watching the Minnesota  Vikings and the Chicago Black Hawks. He loved to travel and he loved watching his kids go through school and participate in their sports events. He never met a stranger and loved to talk to everyone. He always wanted to go back to his home town in Kalkaska, Michigan.

Besides his father, Jerry was also preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Marcia Smires, his mother-in-law, Martha Stewart, his brother-in-law, Gary Helsel, his nieces, Melissa Helsel and Misty Stewart.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Shirley Smires of New London; four daughters, Brittany Bennett and husband Brian of New London, Emily Smires and fiancé, Frankie Morales of Tyler, Victoria and Ashley Smires, both of New London; a stepson, Bo Helsel; his mother, Berta Smires of New London; a sister, Vicky Helsel of New London; a sister-in-law, Barbara Smires; a brother-in-law, Stacy Stewart of Longview; his father and mother-in-law, Russell and Sandi Stewart of California; two grandchildren, Hunter David and Peyton Lee Bennett; his best friend, Torry Ritchie; his side kick, “Pugsie”; and numerous nieces and  nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Stacy Stewart, Jason Moffett, Brian Bennett, Kelly Smith, Phoenix Randolph, James Haskins, Frankie Morales, Johnny Ray Houston, Tom Copeland and Bo Helsel.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday, October 2, 2018 from 5:oo pm to 7:00 pm.
