Obituary of Verald Elmer Sloan
Services for Verald “Tine” Sloan, 93, of Arp, will be at 2PM, Monday, April 16, 2018 in the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow at Williams Cemetery, Arp.
Mr. Sloan passed away at his residence on Friday, April 13, 2018, after a short illness on the same property where he was born.
Verald Elmer Sloan “Poppy” was born February 4, 1925 in Arp, Smith County, Texas to the late Isaac Patton and Sarah Estella Dykes Sloan. He was a graduate of Arp High School. After high school he served in the Armed forces in World War II in the 112th Calvary and 7th Calvary in the South Pacific and Japan. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant. Verald married Maggie Lorene Golden on March 2, 1949 and they were happily married for 64 years. He had a long career with Carrier-United Technology from which he retired after 32 years of service. He was ordained as a deacon in 1962 and remained active for 56 years. He helped organize Swinneytown Baptist Church in 1992 and was a member of the Community Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising cattle and English Setter birddogs, camping, and restoring his 1964 and a half Ford Mustang.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lorene Sloan and an infant daughter, Donna Jeanette Sloan.
Verald is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Billy Paul Evans of Arp; his son and daughter-in-law, James and Janice Sloan of Tyler; three grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and Buddy Furqueron of Tyler, Ashley and Geoffrey Sheffield of Savannah, Georgia, and Amber Labeff of Overton; six great grandchildren Carly and Sheldon Furqueron, Brian and Brandon Nichols, and Jerri Lynn and Matthew Labeff, Jr.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Linda Conway and JoAnn Golden for exceptional care and to the staff of Hospice Connection.
