Obituary of Mickey Don Thompson

Funeral services for Mickey Don Thompson, 73, of Troup, will be held 10:00am, Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Henry’s Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Nathan Briggs officiating the service. Interment will follow at Henry’s Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.

Mickey Don Thompson was born on July 23, 1944 in Jacksonville to the late John L. and Reba Cramer Thompson. He passed away at his home on August 26, 2017.

Mickey graduated from Carlisle High School in 1962 and then accepted a football scholarship to The University of Houston, where he attended and played football for four years.

Before attending college, he married the love of his life, Martha Ann Jones. After student teaching for Houston ISD, he decided teaching and coaching wasn’t his passion and moved back to East Texas. Mickey then started working in the oilfield with his dad. He retired from LaGloria in the summer of 2009. After retiring, much of his time was spent tending cows and working on farm equipment with his brother John. Mickey enjoyed Red River fishing, gardening, and spending time at the family farm. He loved watching sports and could watch the same Western over and over again with his beloved dog Rufus by his side. In 2005 Mickey Don #33, was inducted into the Carlisle High School ‘Wall of Fame’. He’s known by many as ‘the man of few words with a big heart’.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Martha Thompson, son Rickey Don Thompson, and his parents, John L. and Reba Thompson.

Survivors include his daughters, Donna Dowdy & husband Johnny and Tammy Thompson all of Troup; three brothers, John Thompson & wife Pat of Troup, Rex Thompson & wife Karen of Troup, and Ronnie Thompson & wife Jan of Athens; sister, Wanda Johnson & the late Mike Johnson of Troup; four grandchildren, Jonna Rust & husband Clint, Jennifer Gregory & husband Thomas, Jason Dowdy & wife Jacey, and Rick Don Thompson and his mother, Terri Mathis; four great grandchildren, Little Mick Gregory, Briggs Dowdy, Curt Rust, and Brackston Gregory;
