Obituary of Genetta 'Jo' Robinson

Funeral services for Genetta ‘Jo’  Robinson, 96, of Overton will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, May  4, 2017 in the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Atwell Hankins officiating. Burial will be in the Overton City Cemetery.

Genetta “Jo” Godwin Robinson passed from this world on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 96, in Tyler. She was born January 22, 1921 in Stuart, Oklahoma to the late David Shelby and Ida Jane Adams Godwin. The family moved to Joinerville, Texas, following the discovery of the Black Giant, the oil field of east Texas. Godwin had been a contractor, but became an employee of Texaco after the move. Jo graduated from Gaston High School in 1939, and married L.T. Robinson on May 15, 1940. Their children Raymond Shelby Robinson and Rita Robinson (Rinehart) were born in 1941 and 1943. Jo and the children resided in Overton during L.T.’s service as an infantryman in Europe. He was employed by Texaco in Louisiana upon his discharge. The family returned to Overton in 1950, where they owned and operated a laundry service; L.T., soon after, was employed at the LaGloria Oil Refinery in Tyler until his retirement in 1982. The couple lived in Overton until L.T. passed in 2007, and Jo remained living alone until 2012, when she was injured in a fall. She was confined to supervised care homes until she passed. 

Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Robinson was also preceded in death by two granddaughters,  Felicia Roach and Deana McCasland.

 Jo is survived by her two children; son Shelby and wife, Barbara; and daughter Rita and husband Dean Rinehart; a sister, Barbara Godwin Massey, of Tyler; two grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by many of her friends in Overton and was a member of the Overton Missionary Baptist Church for many years.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Thursday, May 4, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm prior to the funeral service.
