Obituary of Martha Ann Thompson

Funeral services for Martha Ann Jones Thompson, 72, of Troup, will be held 10:00 am, Monday March 13, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Troup with Reverend Nathan Briggs officiating. Interment will follow at Henry’s Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup. Martha passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017 at her home in Troup. She was born November 22, 1944 in Rusk County, Texas to John Henery Jones and Mattie Bradley Jones. Martha loved to spend time fishing, gardening, telling jokes, and going to garage sales. She lived in this area over fifty years after moving from Houston. Martha was very much a people person and she loved her dog Rufus. She grew up in Sardis Baptist Church, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troup and attended Henry’s Chapel United Methodist Church these past few years. She loved the Lord and her favorite saying was “We’re so blessed”. Martha always liked decorating and celebrating Christmas. She loved cooking her famous fried pies and holding babies. Martha was an incredible supporter of her family, never missing a ballgame, recital or any other function that included her grandkids. Serving the public was one of her passions. After leaving Troup Bank & Trust she worked for the City of Troup. After the death of her son Rickey, she assisted her daughter Donna at the restaurant, Something Different, then joined the staff at Austin Bank in Troup. She retired from Austin Bank in 2011 after many years of being the encouraging voice behind the drive through window. She was awarded KETK’ Friendly Faces of East Texas before retiring. She is preceded in death by her parents John & Mattie Jones, son Rickey Don Thompson, brother & sister in law Wallace & Doris Jones, brother Paul Jones, sister in law Gloria Jones, and in-laws John & Reba Thompson. Survivors include her husband of over fifty-five years, Mickey Don Thompson of Troup; daughters, Donna Dowdy & husband Johnny of Troup and Tammy Thompson also of Troup; brothers, Butch Jones & wife Elaine, Dean Jones & wife Jean, Leon Jones & wife Loretta, and Bill Jones; grandchildren, Jonna Rust & husband Clint, Jennifer Gregory & husband Thomas, Jason Dowdy & wife Jacey, and Rickey Don Thompson and mother Terri Mathis; great grandchildren, Little Mick Gregory, Briggs Dowdy, Curt Rust, and Brackston Gregory. Pallbearers will be grandsons and other family. The family will receive friends and loved ones at Cottle Funeral Home in Troup Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 5-7pm.
