Obituary of Mona Raye Osborn

Funeral services for Mona Raye Shaw Osborn, 85, of Troup will be held at First United Methodist Church in Troup on Thursday, August 13, 2015, at 10:00 am with Reverend Tommy Earl Burton officiating with interment to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery, Troup. Ms. Osborn passed away Monday, August 10, 2015, in Troup, Texas. She was born on May 28, 1930, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Ira D. Shaw and Alta L. Davis Shaw. Ms. Osborn was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Troup for many years. She energetically volunteered for the monthly Senior Day at the Troup Library. She belonged to multiple “game playing groups,” and she always played to win, especially at Rummikub. She was also in the first organized group of the Apache Bells at Tyler Junior College. Ms. Osborn was preceded in death by her brother, Ira Don Shaw and her beloved husband John Dean Osborn. He was the love of her life. She returned to his arms one day prior to their 67th wedding anniversary. Ms. Osborn started a play school in her home, which was later moved to the First United Methodist Church of Troup. She closed her play school to become a teacher’s aide in a kindergarten classroom. After receiving her teaching degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, she taught kindergarten for 25 years at Troup ISD. In April of this year, she was honored at the Troup Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her many years of dedicated service to Troup ISD children. Survivors include: 2 children, Chuck Osborn of Tyler and Gigi Selman and husband Larry of Frankston, 4 grandchildren, Andy Osborn, Shelley Pfister, Clint Selman, and Adam Selman; 6 great grandchildren, Riley and Callie Selman, Parker Osborn, Abigail Osborn, Emma Pfister and Giselle Pfister. She was lovingly known to family and friends as “Mert.” She was the most patient, kind, and fun-loving grandparent a child could want. Pallbearers will be Butch Dubre, Tim Shaw, Clint Selman, Adam Selman, Andy Osborn and James Branham. Honorary Pallbearers are Joe Carlyle and Larry Selman. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Cottle Funeral Home Chapel, Troup from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Troup, 202 E. Duval Troup, Texas 75789.
