Obituary of Jo Nan Kyger

Jo Nan Kyger, 82, was welcomed into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. She was born in Hillsboro, Texas on April 15, 1931, to Reuel A. “Pat” Shaw and Harvie Annie Bell Shaw. She graduated Baylor University with her bachelor’s degree in 1950 and Stephen F. Austin University with her master’s degree in 1956. She was a retired school teacher who was loved and respected by her students and colleagues. She loved singing in the church choir, playing Mah Jong and Bridge. Enjoyed game days at church and Troup Library. Taught school in Texas, Louisiana, Kansas and Colorado, mostly second grade. Jo Nan was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Troup, Texas, and faithfully served her Lord wherever she was needed. In 1950, Jo Nan met and married the love of her life, James F. Kyger, while both were attending Baylor University. In 1955 they were blessed by the arrival of their only child, Debbie. During her illness and death, Jo Nan was able to remain in her home with assistance from Debbie, loving caregivers, friends and neighbors. Jo Nan is survived by her beloved daughter Debbie O’Quinn and husband Tim, and grandson, T.J. O’Quinn all of Tucumcari, NM, and her cherished cousins, nieces, nephews and their families, and her “2nd daughter”, Vivian Cunningham; and her friend and caregiver, Rosemary Savage, both of Whitehouse. She was preceded in death by her husband James F. Kyger who passed away June 12, 2010. Active Pallbearers will be Tim O’Quinn, T.J. O’Quinn, Eugene “Blue” Martin, Larry Streck, Joe Layne, and Jim Lindley. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ray and Cleta Griffith, Audrey Streck, Lance Browning, Rachelle Hartgraves, Janis Joy, Stephanie Harmon, Tomika Austin, Cynthia Johnson, Gaye Phillips, Jim Witt, Jim Vaughan, Dianne Layne, Linda Kay Evans, June Evans, Nancy Bateman and her Mah Jong, and Bridge friends. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, Friday, March 14, at Cottle Funeral Home in Troup, Texas. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 10:00 am, at First Baptist Church of Troup with Rev. James Cheatham and Rev. Dr. Ron Herring officiating, with interment to follow in the Bradford Cemetery in Troup. If desired, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 516 Troup, Texas,, in memory of Jo Nan Kyger.
